Anybody wants to buy me curry fish head?

A hot spicy curry might burn your tongue and drive you to the nearest tap. But it has a key ingredient, which could be an important weapon in the treatment and prevention of Alzheimer's disease.

According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, scientists have found that curcumin stops the accumulation of destructive beta amyloids which build up in the brains of sufferers. Turmeric has been used in Asian cooking for thousands of years and is one of the cheaper spices. Ground from the root of a plant of the ginger family, it is found wild in the Himalayas and is grown across south Asia.

Taking the road less travelled

Flying fox

Several weeks ago on my trekking trip, I was rewarded handsomely with this nocturnal flying fox. You can see it's well camouflaged. When disturbed, it pretended nothing happened. Easily a wing span of 1.5 metres.

Reinventing

I attended the musical, 'The Sound of Music', as my daughter's date after her confidant (twin brother) was taken ill. I had on a smart-looking long sleeve shirt. Before I could make it to the door, my sweetheart protested saying I looked like an 'ah pek'(old man) . She promptly egged me to put on a metro-sexual short sleeve shirt (birthday present from her, no less!) and insist I look better having it tucked out! She recommended jeans. Having none, I looked half a cool 'ah pek' that evening.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging vs X-Rays.courtesty of Raffles Medical Group

MRI provides detailed pictures of the discs and nerve roots that are not readily seen on normal x-rays. Many conditions are detected early and with greater accuracy

on MRI than radiographs, including disc degeneration, slipped discs, synovial cysts, inflamed nerve roots, blood clots, vessel malformation, tumors and pinched nerves.

Plain radiographs do not show the soft tissue structures or intervertebral discs. There is also the risk of radiation involved. MRI is non-invasive, does not involve radiation and is more sensitive and specific.
