Doctor-avoidance isn't rare among men. According to Statistics Canada, only 74 per cent of men saw a doctor in the last year, and a much smaller percentage had full physicals. The trend is especially prevalent among younger men, but offenders are often middle-aged boomers like me who act like we're bulletproof when, in fact, we're prone to a host of serious ailments. We shy away from medical care unless the problem becomes too obvious to ignore, and that leaves us vulnerable. Avoidance is such an epidemic.. allotted public service announcements to promote a medical awareness initiative under the banner Check Up or Check Out.
So do the stats. One in seven Canadian men will get prostate cancer; one in 26 of us will die from it. One in 14 will get colon cancer; one in 28 will die from it. Prostate, colon, testicular and penile cancers, if caught early, can be cured. All, when caught too late, are cold-blooded killers. Yet by failing to even see a family doctor, too many men are rolling the dice and putting themselves -- and life with their families -- at risk
How to provide full employment
Getting out of Bangkok, my son & I went up to purchase airport tax at 500 baht per person. I had 2 pcs of 1,000 baht and proceeded to punch order 4 tickets. When I finally inserted the 1st 1000 baht note, the machine spitted out 1 ticket and returns 5 pcs of 100 baht note.
The next thing I did was punch order 3 tickets and inserted my 2nd 1000 baht note. I then realize it only accepts 500 and 1000 baht notes. I cancelled my order with the view to reselect ordering 2 tickets instead. Guess what! The silly machine spitted out 10pcs of 100 baht note
and I landed up having 15pcs of 100 baht note and 1 ticket.I end up having to change my 15pcs of 100 baht notes to 3 pcs of 500 baht notes, thanks to a cheerful lady manning change booth. Not taking any chances this time, I went over to the machine and selected single shot, repeating my order 3 times.sigh.
Computers are supposed to be smart, right?
As you must have read, BG from MSoft is coming to town and is delivering a public speech. Whilst free, participants are expected to register online (NRIC no required!) as turnout is expected to be huge and security tight. As I was on leave, I got my staff to register and the nett result are 2 electronic confirmations in my name, one in UPPER case and the other in LOWER case each with UNIQUE ids(ostensibly with lots of lucky 8s).
Congratulations
Wong Ngit Liong appointment as Chairman of NUS Council. Koh Boon Hwee appointed Director to DBS Bank. You can now borrow more money from him!
Great Survival!
About 1 month back, I played driver to my sweetheart after her poetry slam at Zuok. I landed up with 2 extra men to send home. 1 Singlish and the other spoke with a heavy American accent. Latter told me he is Chinese from China, then quickly asserted he is Singaporean, having gone through our local school system and serving National Service. Both turn out to be medical students at NUS.
I ask him where he learn to speak with an A accent(he must obviously be aiming to study in the US). He tells me the programmes he watched. I ask him why he wants to be a Spore citizen. Simple: fees are a lot cheaper, bond is shorter and you are boss when you are a doc in National Service!
